America is facing a crisis unlike anything in recent political memory. While many of us worked hard to avoid the current situation (and still feel bereaved with the election outcome) there will be little opportunity to rest. With every passing day, Donald Trump and his administration announce new executive orders that dismantle our government, hobble our institutions, harm our people, and destroy our wealth, attacks which come so frequently it may seem impossible to keep up. Feeling overwhelmed is a normal response. Bear in mind that everything we are experiencing was planned in advance and intended to be disorienting, dispiriting, and cruel.
These threats to democracy will require extraordinary responses. Concerned citizens will need to band together to protest, write letters, make calls, to donate to legal defense funds and political allies, but also for camaraderie and support. Creating the change we want to see will require us to become personally involved. We must be prepared for a long struggle. The Mt. Lebanon Democratic Committee wants to be there for you, as a resource for local action and help.

Contact your representatives in congress:
Contacting your representatives makes a difference, especially when lots of people do it. Writing an email and letting your representative know your opinion doesn’t take much time and lets them know that you are paying attention to current events. Here are some ways to reach them.
- Email your representatives. You can submit your letter on your representative’s website.
- Mail your representative. A letter in the mail is a physical reminder of your presence. If you want, you can send your letter certified mail with signature required to be extra noticed.
- Visit the offices of your representative. If they will not talk to you, bring a sign and stand outside.
- Call your representative’s office and let them know how you feel.

Donate to Worthy Causes
One of the ways to facilitate change is help those who make it happen with financial support. Presently, there are multiple donation avenues to further the interests of Democracy. These include:
- Groups who defend Democracy in court.
- Groups who support candidates, organize protests, and do lobbying work.
- Groups who provide unbiased, in-depth factual reporting.
- Candidates, parties, and political action committees.
Many groups are involved in several of these areas at once. If you feel like donating, we offer a list of groups to consider on our Resources Page which provides a brief explanation of each.
Stay Informed
America is being swamped in lies. Whether this is that the 2020 Election was stolen, that the downsizing of government is being done lawfully, or that Universities are having their research grants cancelled for their failure to stop antisemitism, we need objective factual reporting more than ever. However, factual reporting has never been as undermined as it is today with the president constantly calling news outlets he doesn’t like “fake news,” White house control of the press pool, lawsuits against news networks, threats to withhold broadcast licenses, the closure of Voice of America, and trying to undermine support for Public Media in congress. If there was ever a time to support journalism it is now.
We recommend that you subscribe to your favorite newspaper or news source and support Public Media such as NPR (National Public Radio) and PBS (Public Television). See our Resources Page for more ideas.
Vote
Voting isn’t just a tally of opinions. It is also a means of intimidation. If many Democrats vote in an obscure primary election, politicians will notice. If we vote again in a general election, they will start to listen. Every politician pays close attention to voter turn-out because they know that their turn for reelection will come. Politicians adjust their politics to accommodate motivated voters. This is why it is important to vote in every primary, in every general election, every time. Voting is the single most powerful way an individual can influence politics.
Think that the next election is far away to matter? Not True!
The next Primary Election is Tuesday, May 20, 2025.
The next General Election is: Tuesday November 4, 2025
