Elaine Cappucci is a current Mt. Lebanon School Board member and is running for re-election that position.
I sat down with Elaine to get more information on her background, accomplishments, and to share with you her work on the school board and her plans for its future.
Elaine was a 1979 graduate of Mt. Lebanon High School. She’d later earn a B.A. in Biology from Franklin & Marshall College and then a Masters in Environmental Management from Duke University.
She was first elected to the Board in 2007. She was later elected by the Board to serve one year as vice president, and two years as Board President. She has served since 2007 as co-chair of the high school renovation committee, and has served several times on the policy committee, chaired a facilities program review team, and was the Board’s liaison to the National School Boards Association, the Mt. Lebanon Commission, and the Environmental Sustainability Board.
Elaine is a Mt Lebanon alumnus herself and has three children who have attended Mt. Lebanon Schools. She is currently an Older Adult Programs/Health and Wellness Director.
Accomplishments & Acknowledgements
Eight years ago when she first ran for school board, much of the community’s focus was on the high school renovation. She undertook the challenge of moving the process along from its long planning stage to near completion.
Four years ago, the District was preparing to develop a new Strategic plan and was facing difficult financial times. The plan has been completed and is now our guiding document, and we have weathered the tough economy without staff furloughs, cutting programs, or negatively affecting educational outcomes. In fact, our District has never been stronger academically. In the next four years, we will be looking at new and innovative educational programs, advanced technology, and outside funding sources that will further advance our already high quality programs.
As co-chair of the high school renovation committee, Elaine Cappucci was instrumental in bringing the project to its now nearly completed status. She was a member of the Board when we interviewed and hired our Superintendent, negotiated the current Act 93 agreement for our District administrators, and has been involved in several contract negotiations (teachers, cafeteria workers, secretaries, etc).
When asked her feelings on the district and our community she responded with:
I think Mt. Lebanon is a wonderful place to live and raise children, and believe that community involvement is one reason this town is special. I have volunteered in the schools in many capacities, including coaching an Odyssey of the Mind team, Mellon writing lab volunteer, prom committee, founder of Foster Science Fair, Jr. Great Books leader, and am currently High School PTA member.
She has also served on the PTA Board at Foster Elementary and Mellon Middle, and on PTA Council. In addition she has previously volunteered for many community organizations including Mt. Lebanon Library; the Blue Devil Club; Mt. Lebanon Baseball Association; Mt. Lebanon Women’s Team Tennis and Southminster Nursery School.
